Overview

Virtual Resource Tagging is a powerful CloudFix feature designed to supercharge your cost optimization workflows by solving a foundational challenge in AWS: missing or inconsistent resource tagging.

With this capability, CloudFix enables you to associate every AWS resource with key organizational metadata—even if the resource itself isn't tagged in AWS. Once you've uploaded a simple CSV file mapping AWS accounts to your org’s structure, CloudFix intelligently applies virtual tags across all relevant resources. These virtual tags can be used to filter dashboards, generate cost-saving insights, and direct notifications to the right owners—unlocking the full potential of CloudFix’s automation and analytics.

Why It Matters

AWS environments often lack standardized tagging practices, especially for fields like ownership or team attribution. Without these, it's hard to answer questions like:

• Who owns this resource?

• Which team should receive the cost optimization alert?

• How do I segment my cost savings by department or product line?

CloudFix solves this with zero disruption to your AWS setup—no manual tag management, no risk of tag conflicts. Just pure insight and actionability.

How It Works

1. Upload Your Metadata

   • Prepare a CSV file with this structure:

     aws_account_id,l4,l5,account_owner
     123456789012,Product-Team,Analytics,alice@example.com
     

   • Head to the Settings page in CloudFix and upload your file via the new "Resource Tagging" section.

2. Data is Ingested

   • Your file is stored in CloudFix’s internale database.

   • Any prior tags for your tenant are not touched.

3. Virtual Tags Are Applied

   • During each Finder run, CloudFix will virtually tag AWS resources using:

     • cloudfix_account_owner

     • cloudfix_L4

     • cloudfix_L5

   • These are not physical AWS tags—there’s no impact on your tagging policies or tag-based IAM.

4. Filter and Take Action

   • Use these virtual tags to filter recommendations, segment dashboards, and route notifications to the correct team members.

Things to Know

• Virtual tags do not alter your actual AWS environment.

• You can update your CSV file at any time to reflect org changes.

• Virtual tags are visible in CloudFix dashboards and reports only.

• This feature is a prerequisite for precise, targeted notifications.
